SERIES DESCRIPTION
Mind Monsters is an eccentrically funny, wildly imaginative four-book series about the monsters we encounter in the world and those that make themselves at home in our hearts and our heads.
Alex Scott’s journey begins in 1990s New York at an alien-owned record company where nonexempt employees remove their brains before work. As an assistant surrounded by bizarre executives, impossible corporate rules, and workplace insanity, Alex has learned to become whatever the people around her need her to be. When she finally gets what she’s chased her whole life, she realizes that none of it will save her.
Things only get stranger.
Twenty years later, Alex is forty-five, newly fired, heartbroken, and watching the life she thought she wanted fall apart. Then she encounters a billionaire tyrant obsessed with power and greed, determined to sever humanity’s connection to the spirit guides she’s just discovered.
As Alex is pulled deeper into a battle she never expected, she’s also struggling with herself. Addiction brings her to the edge. Recovery forces her to stop running. Bizarre technology and a dark force feeding on fear, shame, and separation continually challenge what she believes about herself and the world around her.
Eventually, Alex must confront one of her most powerful monsters, a voice that’s been inside her all her life. The closer she gets to understanding it, the more she begins to recognize how deeply her life has been shaped by other people’s expectations, demands, judgments, and cruelty.
But Mind Monsters isn’t a story about defeating every monster and emerging with all the answers. Alex makes mistakes. She repeats patterns she thought she’d escaped. She runs when she should stay and stays when she should leave. Sometimes she recognizes what she’s doing, and sometimes she doesn’t.
Funny, surprising, and deeply human, Mind Monsters follows Alex as she finally begins asking a question she has spent most of her life avoiding: Who am I when I’m no longer trying to be who everyone else wants me to be?
Finding the answer means discovering who she is and, for the first time, learning how to come home to herself.
Follow Alex across all four books as she battles the monsters around and within her, learning how to come home to herself. Book 1, Rock Gods & Messy Monsters, Hatz’s award-winning debut, introduces Alex in a surreal, alien-owned record company in 1990s New York City.
